Scholarship committee member Connie Kindsvater enjoyed meeting our newest Scholarship student, Andrew Friedgen, a junior majoring in journalism at Florida Gulf Coast University. Andrew has earned an overall 3.81 GPA. Passionate about writing, he has enjoyed all of his J-classes and enjoys learning from the four journalism professors Lyn Millner, Dr. Richard Kenny, Judd Cribbs, and an Adjunct Professor Tom Hansom, from NDN.
As part of the FGCU Eagle News staff, Andrew writes an opinion column. He’s currently working on a multi-media class project interviewing news writers in Syria, and has helped with a journalism forum for high school students who attend FGCU at which our former scholarship recipient Alex Pena spoke. Alex is now freelancing news stories out of Egypt.
Of the 370 FGCU different scholarship funds, 277 are currently endowed. Additional journalism scholarships include those created by the Scripps Howard Foundation, the News-Press, and the Naples Daily News.
Oscar Santiago, one of our scholarship recipients who is enrolled in the Collier campus of Edison College, is doing quite well. In addition to earning all As and one B, he is very active in student affairs.
Phil Beuth, Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, recently sat down with Oscar Santiago at lunch.
“Oscar participated in a three-day Model Legislature program in Tallahassee, won the election as Vice President of the Student Body, and also is tutoring at Lely High School.”
Go Oscar !!!
