What Do Tom Hanks, Washington Post and World Press Freedom Day Have in Common?

May 3 was World Press Freedom Day.

In honor of the occasion, the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA.org) published an article May 1 addressing some of the current challenges facing journalists.

In the article titled, “Press Freedom Has Caught COVID-19,” Michael Castengera, RTDNA contributor, shares that “Various journalism groups say politicians and government officials are using COVID-19 concerns as an excuse to restrict, and in some cases, attack the press.”

As a reminder of the importance of a free press in our democratic society, the article includes a link to a 60-second spot YouTube created by the Washington Post and voiced by actor Tom Hanks, which aired during the 2019 Super Bowl. “Knowing keeps us free” is a line from the spot that reminds us all to be vigilant in ensuring that journalists be allowed to report. Journalists gather facts, bring us the story, no matter the cost. It is an inspiring message.

The mission of the RTDNA is to provide visibility, advocacy, training, resources, networking and awards for broadcast and digital journalists. The entire RTDNA article can be found here.
