Your Board in Action

The October 18 NPC Board Meeting was lightly attended, but the small group brainstormed several new, interesting ideas for the 2019 year’s program. Your suggestions for program topics and speakers are always welcome.

November is beginning to look like “First Amendment/Free Press” month. We start with the NPC lunch program at Tiburon on November 1 featuring Barbara Petersen, President of the First Amendment Foundation of Florida, and our own NPC member Tom Marquardt, former editor and publisher of the Capital Gazette Communications in Annapolis, Maryland. They will discuss issues related to the First Amendment and Florida’s Sunshine laws.

On Tuesday, November 13, plan to attend the “Free Speech, Free Press, 2018 First Amendment Festival,” hosted by the News-Press, Naples Daily News and WGCU at Florida Gulf Coast University. Some events are free but require registration: tickets.news-press.com

Mike Sheffield and Connie Kindsvater continued planning a joint program with the Collier County Library System, offering a freelance writing and blogging workshop featuring as many as eight experts. The event is scheduled for Saturday, December 8, and is open to the public.

As a follow-up to last month’s report, the final Sizzling Summer Media Mixer in late September drew a large and energetic crowd to Society, a rooftop bar and restaurant in Bell Tower Mall in Fort Myers. It attracted NPC members and guests from Naples and brought in new faces from the News-Press, several television stations and FGCU. As a result, we’ve already received and approved applications for four new members.
