A Celebration of the Free Press
and the Future of Journalism
Join us on Thursday, June 7, 2018, at 11:30 a.m. for our Press Club of Southwest Florida luncheon at the Tiburon Golf Club.
We will begin by honoring Connie Kindsvater, the Press Club of Southwest Florida Scholarship Chairman. Connie took over the scholarship program from long-time member Phil Beuth, and she has maintained and built the program into what it is today.
Jaynie Tice, one of our three 2018 graduating NPC scholars, will talk about the NPC scholarship program and how it has helped her pursue and achieve her professional goals as a journalist.
Former CBS Correspondent and NPC board member Bob Orr will read portions of a stirring speech about the vital nature of a free press. The speech was given in March by Dick Munro, retired Chairman and CEO of Time, Inc., when he was honored at the annual “Honor the Free Press” luncheon in Naples. Dick, who was recently named Collier County’s Outstanding Citizen, can’t join us June 7, so Bob will share some of Dick’s insightful words with us.
We will also be joined by Brett Murphy, a reporter on USA TODAY’s investigations desk. He was recently named a Pulitzer finalist for national reporting and received the Hillman Prize last month. Brett previously covered courts for the Naples Daily News and worked at Investigative Reporters and Editors as a Google NewsLab fellow. His other bylines include Univision, The Guardian, and the San Jose Mercury News. Brett is the co-founder of Local Matters, a weekly newsletter curating the best investigative reporting around the country.
Buffet lunch served. Cost: $30 members, $40 guests, $10 students
