Here’s your chance to give back to the profession of journalism and communications. Florida Gulf Coast University is launching a new FGCU Mentoring Program, an initiative designed to connect current students with alumni and community members for meaningful mentorship experiences. The program is open to all students, regardless of major or class year, and aims to provide professional and personal guidance from leaders across Southwest Florida.
Press Club members often ask about opportunities to help mentor students and young professionals beyond the mentoring our members provide to our journalism scholarship students. FGCU looks like a good place to start. Glenn Miller and I teach News Literacy, which is required for journalism majors, but the course is also an elective in the Humanities. In my class, all but one of the students is majoring in journalism, which has given me an optimistic view that interest in journalism and communication careers remains an attractive profession.
FGCU President Aysegul Timur said the program reflects the university’s commitment to student success and lifelong learning. “This is an incredible way to provide our students with professional and personal guidance from leaders right here in our community,” she said. The mentoring program is now accepting applications from both mentors and mentees. The deadline to apply is September 12. To learn more or to apply, visit fgcu.edu/mentoringprogram.
