Press Club Scholarship Students Continue to Shine!

Camila Cal (University of Central Florida, senior): Camilla is still interning at the Florida Apartment Association as the Editorial/Communications intern, and she was recently accepted into UCF’s Honor Thesis Program, which includes writing a thesis during the next two semesters. (Mentor: Carole Greene)

Avalon Gordy (Florida Gulf Coast University, junior): Avalon just completed her first internship at NBC-2 and ABC-7 as a reporter. She is also maintaining her job at the station as a news technician for over a year now. (Mentor: Rachel Pierce)

Reese Holiday (University of Central Florida, junior): Reese finished his year-long internship with the Santiva Chronicle and will now focus more on his journalism classes this semester. He said that his mentor, George Lehner, has been a great help and Reese looks forward to having more conversations with him about improving as a journalist.

Lexi Holt (American University, Washington, DC, sophomore): Lexi is starting her sophomore year and is looking forward to being on campus for the first time, now that the university reopened for in-person classes. (Mentor: Frank Cipolla)

Meghan Kennedy (St. Leo University, junior): Meghan is happy to be back on campus with in-person classes. She is taking classes in Journalistic Writing and Photography. The Serial Killers class that she is also taking requires that she write a serial killer story. (Mentor: Lauren Sweeney)

Sebastian Languidey (Florida Atlantic University, senior): Sebastian is looking forward to being on an episode of FAU Today as a News Anchor. (Mentor: Connie Kindsvater)

Maddie Laufer (Florida State University, freshman): Maddie is continuing her internship with Naples Illustrated and is getting involved with various clubs and organizations at her college, particularly with “Her Campus FSU” magazine. (Mentor: Rhona Saunders)

Brianna Monroe (University of Florida, senior): This semester Brianna is taking an applied journalism class and an applied magazine class. In addition, she is writing a weekly article for a campus magazine, “Her Campus UFL” and she is applying for the role of graphic designer or photo editor for the December edition. (Mentor: Karla Wheeler)

Janie Palmer (Florida State University, junior): Janie is taking several communication courses to prepare for her application to the Media/Communications Studies major; she’s also pursuing a minor in English. She completed an internship in Atlanta during the summer with Harrison Design, an architecture firm. She said the internship strengthened her desire for a future job in a media-related field. (Mentor: Debbie Meade)

Kala Parkinson (University of Florida, graduated spring 2021): Kala is excited to announce that her first full-time job is in Southwest Colorado, reporting for both The Journal in Cortez and The Durango Herald. She said that she was “drawn to the mountains” and she thanks her mentor, Karla Wheeler, for giving her some really great advice about taking a job there.

Samantha Roesler (Florida Gulf Coast University, senior): Samantha is heavily focusing on her Executive Editor position of Eagle Media (FGCU’s student-run news organization). She is also taking a Democracy Watch class that requires her to pick a local city to cover the whole semester, and she chose Bonita Springs government. (Mentor: Glenn Miller)

Sebastian Weatherford (Florida Southern College, freshman year; undecided which school sophomore year): Sebastian decided to “step back and re-assess” which school he should attend. While he takes this semester off from school; he is trying to make the right decision and is looking at FGCU, UCF and UNF. (Mentor: Oscar Santiago)
