Your Board in Action

We had a well-attended and efficient board of governors meeting by Zoom on Thursday, September 17.

Young Journalist Awards – Please Encourage Participation

One of the highlights of the meeting included an update from Vice-President of Administration Bob Orr and Board Member Gregg Ramshaw, co-chairs of this year’s Young Journalist Awards program. Bob and Gregg reminded us that applications for the Fourth Annual Young Journalist Awards are due on October 1. If you are (or know someone who is) a newspaper, magazine or broadcast TV news reporter under the age of 30 (or over 30 but less than five years of experience), plan to submit your application and supporting documents soon. Board member Marqueeta Curtis-Haynes is collecting the applications, which will be reviewed by a committee. Winners will once again receive a $500 cash award as well as the opportunity to share their work at the annual press club meeting in December. Learn more HERE.

Other highlights from the board meeting include:

Press Club Journalism Scholarship Committee Chair Connie Kindsvater provided a report about the successes of our current and previous journalism scholarship students. Not only does the press club provide scholarships, it also offers valuable mentor relationships to guide and support students throughout their college experiences and beyond. (Be sure to read about the scholarship students in the weekly SCOOP newsletter.)

Program Chair David Silverberg continues to look for ideas for Zoom events. Board Member Joel Banow is working on a program to highlight the impact of COVID-19 on cultural organizations. Member Arnold Klinsky recommended Steve Scully as a speaker for a special evening press club program on October 20. Scully is C-SPAN host, executive producer, and political editor, and he will be the moderator for the second presidential debate. Mark your calendar, and watch for details about our October 20 event.

With the club’s 25th anniversary coming up in 2021, the board brainstormed ideas to celebrate.  Rhona Saunders, co-founder of the club and board of governors member for life, and Board Member Jill Jaffe offered to lead the planning efforts for events and activities next year.

A Zoom holiday event will also be planned.

If you have suggestions for a “newsmaker” program, wish to volunteer as a writer for SCOOP, or want to assist with the holiday party or 25th anniversary planning, please let me know.
