Your Board in Action

The October Press Club of Southwest Florida (NPC) board meeting covered several old issues and a few new ones. After approving two member applications submitted by our membership chair, Karla Wheeler, we engaged in a stimulating discussion about possible programs for the upcoming season. Our VP of Programs Randy Jones has done an exemplary job of lining up speakers who will be informative and entertaining. He has a few surprises in store for us. No, I will not let any of his secrets out of the bag.

Under “Old Business,” we reviewed the interns’ progress on the bio/photo project for the “Members Only” section of our website. The interns attended the October luncheon, so by the time you read this, many of you will already have met them. We approved the design for the raffle tickets that we will sell to raise money for our Terrence J. Miller Scholarship Fund. We accepted — with relief — the slate of officers and governors the nominating committee members put together for our Dec. 4 election. Look elsewhere in Scoop for that slate.

Under “New Business,” I am happy to report that our holiday celebration/annual meeting on Dec. 4 will cost members and their significant others only $25 each. The NPC treasury will pick up the cost of mimosas and the additional cost for the extravagant holiday lunch menu the Hilton will provide. We passed a motion for a small amendment to our bylaws: we wish to eliminate the designation as 1st and 2nd relevant to our two vice presidents. The board feels these numerical designations are not necessary as both vice presidents’ responsibilities carry equal value and neither officer is more important than the other. We will vote on this bylaws amendment at the annual meeting.

If any NPC member would like the board to take up an issue, please let me know before our next meeting, which is set for Nov. 13.
